NDMC to hike budget for school uniforms The Hindustan Times20-December 2012INFLATION Primary students to get R1,500 instead of R500; R800 for nursery kidsKeeping in view the rising cost of living, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has planned to increase the amount given to primary schoolchildren for purchasing uniforms from the existing R500 to R1,500 per year. It also plans to increase the fund for nursery kids from R300 to R800. Each student, studying in a primary school, is given R500 to buy a jersey, a pair of trousers, socks and shoes. But it is not sufficient to meet the expenses. The rising inflation has made it very difficult for all of us. The money that the corporation gives children to buy uniforms is not enough. A sweater alone costs R500, said Rekha Gupta, chairperson, education committee. The suggestion to hike the fund was made at the committee's budget meeting held on Wednesday. It will now be forwarded to the standing committee for approval. The committee also suggested increasing the stipend for each girl student from R200 to R500 per year.Apart from uniforms, the committee has allotted a major chunk of its budget to improve the infrastructure of schools such as playgrounds. It said greenery in schools would be improved and more security guards recruited, adding that biometric attendance system would be introduced in all its schools soon. The committee has also increased the provision for refreshment from R20 to R40 per child. "In municipal schools, a child gets R20 for refreshment, which is not enough to meet the cost of his/ her meal. A bottle of water alone costs R10," she said. Gupta said schools would have 28,000 new desks in a few weeks. To boost the morale of students and teachers, the corporation will award meritorious children. Their performance will be judged through exams. At present, no exam is held in schools and children are promoted every year.Information gathered from Internet from Click Here
