Teacher says goodbye after 38-year career By Sarah Doktor, Simcoe ReformerThursday, November 1, 2012 12:33:31 EDT PMLANGTON - Kathleen Long was destined to be a schoolteacher.Even as a child she would take on the role of the schoolteacher while playing with friends. After a teaching career that spanned 38 years, Long completed her final lesson plan before retirement yesterday.Long spent the majority of her teaching career at Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board schools such as St. Michaels School in Walsh, St. Frances Cabrini in Delhi and Our Lady of LaSalette in LaSalette. For more than 15 years, the kindergarten room of Sacred Heart School in Langton has been her second home.Being the kindergarten teacher, you get to see (children) develop through the years, said Long during an open house retirement celebration held at the school on Tuesday. Ive been here long enough that I know all of the kids to Grade 8. You can see how theyre really changed and blossomed. Some children who began kindergarten as shy children ended up being student council presidents and leaders within the school. You think, wow, something you did got them that far, said Long. She has also had past students return to complete their co-op placements with her as they pursue their own teaching career. She just totally embraces the new kids she has each year, said former Sacred Heart principal Zolton Rapai at the open house celebration. You can easily see the love she has for education and life. The children at Sacred Heart showed their appreciation for their beloved kindergarten teacher during an assembly on Tuesday. Each class prepared something in her honour such as a slideshow, song or dance. Many of the students incorporated the Tu De Ta, a silly movement song Long is known for.It was just amazing how much (the students) respect her and love her. They will miss her, said principal Jo Skoblenick. The feeling is mutual, said Long.Ill miss it but Im sure theres a whole big world out there, she said.Long already has a trip to New York and Hawaii planned for her retirement. She will also spend time with her three grandchildren and in her garden.Sarah Doktor519-426-3528 ext. 112sarah.doktor@sunmedia.catwitter.com/sarahreformerInformation gathered from Internet from Click Here
