University of Kentucky Awards Scholarships To Three Outstanding Indian StudentsNew Delhi: For the 2012-2013 school year, the University of Kentucky proudly awarded three undergraduate Indian students highly competitive scholarships one of which fully covered tuition. Freshman Ron Mathias received a scholarship covering 50 percent of her tuition and Abhishek Agrawal received a $5,000 scholarship. Harkabir Saluja was the recipient of the International Leadership Scholarship, which covers the full cost of his tuition during his undergraduate studies. The University of Kentucky awards an array of scholarships to international students. Each year five to ten W.C. Parker Diversity Scholarships are awarded to international students to aid in their pursuit of a bachelors degree. Furthermore, thirty International Student Scholarships are awarded, and incoming freshmen students have the opportunity to receive Academic Scholarships, some of which are automatic and others competitive. Scholarship opportunities also exist for the graduate students and other scholars.The application process for the scholarship was very smooth. The international enrollment manager oversaw the whole process and personally answered all of my questions quickly and thoroughly. She went out of her way to make the process as convenient for me as possible, which I greatly appreciated. I am so happy to have won this scholarship and am enjoying my studies at the University of Kentucky, said Saluja. Mathias, a native of city of Mangalore, is currently pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering and was the recipient of the International Distinction Scholarship. So far my time at the University of Kentucky has been great. The people here are accepting and open to new cultures and people from foreign countries. I met a lot of other international students at the orientation who share similar experiences as me from coming abroad; I connect with them well. Close to campus there are also a few Indian food stores and restaurants, which satisfy my cravings for home-cooked meals. I personally think that the campus is beautiful and has excellent facilities. The moment I got here I knew that the school spirit was infectious, said Mathias. Bangalore-born Agrawal is also a freshman and the winner of one of the International Student Scholarships awarded. He is studying Finance and chose to study at the University of Kentucky because of the positive regards it has received in terms of academics, sports and overall college experience. Upon arriving to Lexington, Kentucky, he said the transition to his new life went flawlessly and is excited for what his future holds. Winner of the International Leadership Scholarship covering full tuition costs, Saluja is a Freshman from New Delhi majoring in Philosophy. International Enrollment Manger, Audra Cryder, serves as a key resource in providing information to potential students about scholarship opportunities, as well as aiding them in the application process. In addition to the traditional financial support of graduate students and academic scholarships for undergraduate students, this year a new International Undergraduate Scholarship program was launched. Almost 20 percent of these scholarships were awarded to Indian students, including some of the top scholarships that cover full tuition and 50 percent of tuition costs. "We were delighted to launch a new scholarship program for international undergraduates applying to the University of Kentucky. The program takes into consideration factors that go beyond the traditional academic merit. We were pleasantly surprised with the diversity and caliber of our applicants and proud to award these scholarships to the most deserving students from nine different countries, including India, said Cryder. Among the 1,500 international student population within the Universitys diverse student body of 28,000 there are currently 189 Indian students studying at all levels at the University of Kentucky.
